It has been a week…

Between the Boston tragedy, feeling like garbage, snow in late April and an overscheduled/traveling husband, this past week seemed to drag on. To remedy a less than stellar few days, Mr. B and I had a fun date night last night. Just the two of us, having a real meal that I didn’t have to make or pick up at Whole Foods. I even wore (these delicious) heels for the first time in weeks. A perfect weekend pick me up.

Today was just as nice; an early morning class with Little B, sunshine, booked flights to Arizona next week (!!!!) and now a family dinner just the three of us (where dessert will most definitely be involved). I have a feeling next week is going to be a good one…

Hope you had a great weekend!

Splurge vs. Steal: Suede bootie edition

I have a love/hate relationship with suede.  Of course, I absolutely love the look (adds a bit of texture to an outfit, without looking too polished), but I loathe the maintenance that suede requires (especially in the winter).

I’ve had my eye on these Isabel Marant Dicker booties for some time now (pictured on the bottom left).  I fell in love with the Jenny when I purchased this past Fall and have worn them almost every day since Thanksgiving (that brings the price per wear to pennies. Bargain!).  So adding another well made, comfortable boot to the rotation seems like a solid investment.  But in suede?  Not sure if I want to manage the upkeep…

Fast forward to this Nine West Sosie bootie.  Similar style and heel height, but insanely inexpensive (translate: I could care less if I ruin them after this winter trudging through ice and snow to get to a play date).

Bonus: both pairs would also look cute with white jeans and a neutral tunic (such as this number from Ms. Marant) come Spring.  Perhaps if I bought the less expensive pair, I could have the tunic, too?  Easy math…

What do you think?  Which pair is your favorite?

Pop Quiz!
Can you spot the designer blue suede pumps? Kind of difficult, isn’t it?
Seeing that blue suede is everywhere lately (especially on this blog), I thought I would conduct a little experiment to see if there was a major difference in color, quality and fit (you know, the types of things that SAHM moms do when their children are napping…and they don’t feel like doing laundry).
Guess what? Not much! Those Target pumps I bought on a whim are actually just as comfy as the Manolo and J Crew versions (and how fun is that silver cap toe?!). The J Crew blue hue is a bit bright, but that’s just personal preference (and they pinch the toes, so order a half size larger). The Manolo’s are still my favorites given their color and pitch, but they definitely have some tough competition…and in this case, Target may be spot on!

Splurge vs. Steal

I purchased a pair of Jimmy Choo leopard smoking slippers this past Spring and they quickly became my favorite pair of flat shoes.  I can’t say enough about them.  Comfortable, quality material, stylish, versatile…the list goes on.  So much so, that I really think I need them in more colors (black, studs, burgundy, zebra…the options are endless).  But…at $500 per pair, that’s just a bit frivolous.  I was thumbing through the latest In Style and found these Nine West faux calf hair smoking slippers.  Wha?  They look almost identical to me.  And for a mere $69? Sign me up (Nine West was also offering a discount, so I got them for $55 - score!).  I tested them out during a marathon errand spree yesterday and they held up perfectly fine.  I won’t lie to you, the Choos are definitely more comfortable and substantial, but for the money, these will serve their purpose (until the Choos go on sale, of course).  If black doesn’t do it for you, check out their leopard and camel options.

Can you tell a huge difference in these pics (Hint: Choos are on the left)?

Apparently, this blog is all about shoes now…naturally.

This week…

Really into:

  • Fashion Week! The Spring previews look exceptional.  Reed Krakoff, Rodarte, Mandy Coon and Marc Jacobs killed it.  Really looking forward to seeing pieces from Elizabeth and James, Rebecca Minkoff, Nanette Lepore, Michael Kors and Rachel Roy in stores.  Also loving that pattern is still in play…and neon made a few appearances!
  • Suede pumps - simple and feminine; adding a little color and texture to Fall’s print and leather
  • Crew Cuts - our new go-to for kids’ gifts…for the many birthday parties that Little B will be attending in the next few weeks. I just wish this line was around when I was six years old.  I would have definitely rocked those polka dot leggings and glitter ballet flats…
  • NARS Autumn Leaves lipstick - a subtle red hue, just like it sounds.  Perfect for those that don’t want to commit to the dark bordeaux lip.  Also tones down the blue and purple eyes popular for Fall
  • Little B now waves “good bye” to everyone.  It’s the cutest thing I have ever seen
  • Pumpkin Spice (duh) - Both the pumpkin spice Hershey’s kisses and the Keurig pods are tasty seasonal treats.  The pods are a little more spice than pumpkin (and let’s face it, Starbucks really dominates this category), but I’m not complaining
  • Gallery Girls - my new guilty pleasure (in addition to RHNY, RHM, Newsroom, Boss, Breaking Bad, etc…my DVR is full, yo)

Not so into:

  • Honey Boo Boo - I just discovered who this person is.  Oh my.  Just tragic.  I have seen it all.  I want that hour back that I spent watching her show…
  • Little B now likes to rearrange any piece of furniture he can get his hands on (chairs and bar stools are his favorite).  It is not so cute…
  • Leather maternity tops.  Yes, I saw one hanging in a window of a certain maternity store on Damen this week.  Here’s the thing.  When I was preggers, I desperately wanted to remain stylish.  However, pregnant women sweat.  A lot.  And leather does not breathe.  Need I say more?
